Having taken their points tally to 37 with their midweek victory over FC Wokingham,
Wanderers knew a victory against lowly Woodley Hammers would see them clinch third place and promotion.
The task seemed easy enough, especially as the visitors were only able to
field 10 men.
Complacency seemed to have taken hold of the Blues as they made a slow and
lethargic start to the game. Woodley came close to scoring first. A corner from the right was whipped in and was
heading for the back of the net when Matt Cook cleared away with a firm header.
The lucky escape spurred Wanderers into life and they managed their first
effort of the game. Ian Griffiths played a subtle pass through to Anthony Prior who rushed his change and fired over
from twenty five yards.
Five minutes later Jamie Ryall was sent clear on the right and unselfishly
squared the ball, only for Prior to fire over with the goal gaping.
The missed opportunities proved even more costly as the half drew to a close,
as a defensive mix-up was punished by Woodley's lone forward to put the visitors in front. Wokingham were unable to
hit back before half-time.
With victory so important, Wanderers seemed to be feeling the pressure and
this continued in the second-half. Both Ryall and Ian Griffiths spurned chances and fired over the bar from close range.
Finally on the hour mark, Wokingham levelled the scores. An instinctive
shot on the turn from Richard Scott powered beyond the goalkeeper at his near post. The goal provided great relief to
the Blues and their style became more relaxed..
With fifteen minutes remaining Wanderers took the lead for the first time
in the contest. The Woodley goalkeeper hit a goal-kick straight to Prior, thirty yards from goal. Prior beat the
last defender and defied the acute angle with a clipped shot that struck the far-post before rolling into the back of the
net.
In their next attack, Wokingham nearly scored a third when Lewis Trusty headed
over from close range.
Peter Killingworth was introduced with ten minutes remaining as his loyalty
throughout the season was rewarded. First-choice 'keeper Harding moved up-front for the closing stages of the game,
and nearly scored when he just failed to connect with Tom Soane's excellent cross.
As the game moved into injury time, the unthinkable happened. A long
ball from the Woodley left evaded the Blues' back four and a shot was struck beyond Killingworth, giving him no chance.
The match was to have one final twist. From the restart Harding was
sent clear and produced a calm finish to snatch back victory for Wokingham.
Wanderers made this victory as difficult as possible, but were able to celebrate
an exciting end to a successful season. They will be playing in the First Division next year.
