Wanderers continued their promotion push with a third successive win against
Ashridge Park.
The absence of Nick Harding saw Lewis Trusty start in goal for the Blues.
Jamie Ryall continued at left back, and Tom Soane moved onto the right wing in place of Ian Griffiths, who deputised for brother
Dave in the middle of midfield. Paul Martin joined Richard Scott up front.
From kick off it was apparent what Ashridge's plan was and although Wanderers
coped well, Ashridge's target man won several headers in the opening stages.
The first twenty minutes saw a fairly even contest. Wanderers were unable
to produce any efforts on target, whilst Ashridge were denied just once when Trusty saved with his leg from close range.
Wokingham were just on top in terms of possession, and made the breakthrough
from a corner. Prior's low delivery caused problems and Richard Scott engineered space to turn and fire high into the
net with his left foot.
The lead was short-lived as Wanderers' back line failed to step up as a unit
and the Ashridge forward exploited the space to comprehensively beat the exposed Trusty.
Wokingham hit the bar through Scott's excellent 40 yard free-kick,
then found the net minutes later. Ian Griffiths and Scott helped to set up Paul Martin, who beat the Ashridge 'keeper
with a low shot.
Unfortunately for Wanderers, Ashridge hit back again on the stroke of half
time. A long ball over the top was headed towards goal, and Trusty misjudged the flight of the ball and it bounced through
his legs and into the net.
Things got worse for Wokingham early in the second half. Another direct
ball caught out a static defence and Trusty was given no chance by the Ashridge player.
It took Wanderers a short while to settle down, but they then found a rhythm
of play and enjoyed a good spell of possession that saw Paul Martin twice strike wide of the goal. Then the
Ashridge 'keeper stopped his deflected shot with a fine save.
Wokingham found the equaliser with twenty five minutes to go, and it came
from the most unexpected source. Prior's driven corner from the left was headed powerfully into the net by Clint Falcus
- his first goal for over two years.
The Blues had the momentum, and it became a case of when they would score
rather than if they would. The introduction of substitutes Matt Cook and Jon Mercer gave Wokingham extra pace, and the
latter was unlikely with a fierce shot that just went over the bar.
Mercer's skill and short pass then fed Paul Martin, who took his time before
firing a low shot into the corner of the net from the edge of the box.
Ashridge applied pressure, and called Trusty into action once more.
Wanderers were resolute though, and held on for a vital victory.
