Wanderers produced their best performance for several matches against high-flying
Division Four side Hope and Anchor, but it wasn't enough to progress to the Quarter Finals.
The Blues were missing Darren Wakley through illness, and so Phil Soane started
at left back. With Andy Corless unable to make kick-off, Jamie Ryall stepped in at right back. There was a place
on the bench for Jon Mercer.
Wokingham began the match brightly, and passed the ball around confidently.
Tom Soane was particularly effective in dropping deep to pick up the ball, and together with Steve Martin, he managed to earn
Wanderers four early corners.
This was an even contest, with Wanderers just edging things. Unfortunately
the visitors were to take the lead twenty minutes in. Nick Harding advanced from his line as Hope and Anchor attacked,
as the ball was cleared it left Harding stranded as the ball was lobbed over him and into the net.
For the remainder of the first half Wanderers kept things tight, but were
unable to produce many chances themselves.
David Griffiths had a shot blocked, before a good Blues' move ended with Anthony
Prior testing the 'keeper with a well-struck shot from Ian Griffiths' pass.
Into the second half and Wokingham began strongly. Tom Soane received
the ball with his back to goal, turned, and curled an effort just wide of the upright from twenty five yards.
At the other end, Wokingham caught the visitors offside on several occasions,
and limited their opponents' chances.
On the hour mark Wanderers made their first change, as Mercer came on for
Richard Scott. Within minutes he had an impact as he challenged for a header and was fouled. Despite appearing
to be two yards inside the box, the referee controversially awarded a free kick. Ian Griffiths' cross was headed away
by the visitors' defence.
A second change saw Corless come on for the hard-working Phil Soane.
As the match entered the last ten minutes, Hope and Anchor extended their
advantage. Nick Harding got a good punch on a corner kick, but had no chance as the ball was struck back through the
bodies in front of him and into the net.
Wanderers gave themselves a chance of forcing extra time when they scored
with three minutes remaining. Tom Soane had been fouled on the edge of the penalty area, and from a central position
Ian Griffiths curled home his first goal of the season.
Wokingham were unable to create any further opportunities in the little time
that they had left, and Hope and Anchor secured their passage into the next round.
