After a month without a match, Wanderers returned to action with a comfortable
win against AFC Nam.
Nam were only able to start the match with nine players, although they were
able to field a full team for the second half. Wanderers themselves were hit with the absence of Nick Harding and Tom
Soane. With no Peter Killingworth either, Lewis Trusty started his second stint in goal this season.
Wanderers struggled to find any rhythm in the opening period. A combination
of a lack of match fitness, and some level of complacency did the Blues little favours. At times they were able to pass
the ball well, with Andy Corless demonstrating most effort at right back.
As expected, AFC Nam were unable to manage many efforts on goal in the first
half, despite some spirited work from the home side.
Wokingham saw chances fall to Richard Scott and Chris Orbell, which were easily
saved, before taking the lead midway through the half. Scott's corner from the left wasn't properly cleared, and as
Chris Hillsdon challenged, the ball fell kindly for Anthony Prior. With several bodies between him and the goal, Prior
lashed a left-footed shot into the roof of the net.
AFC Nam had little time to work their way back into the match, as they fell
further behind with the goal of the game. Steve Martin cleverly worked some space, before floating a fine pass to pick
out Prior's run. With the goalkeeper coming out to meet the pass, Prior executed a lobbed volley over him and into the
net for his second.
The goals helped Wanderers raise their performance, and Scott flashed an effort
wide following good work from Darren Wakley and Phil Soane.
With ten minutes of the first half remaining Wanderers scored their third
goal as Prior completed his hat-trick. A long ball over the top was Prior muscle his way past the last Nam defender,
before stabbing a low shot past the goalkeeper.
The second half saw the match become an even scrappier affair.
To their credit, Nam kept going, and managed to test Lewis Trusty on two occasions.
Trusty saved well both times, to complete a confident performance in the Blues' goal.
For Wokingham, chances came and went before they extended their advantage
on the hour mark. Richard Scott did well to release Prior, who raced clear to place home his and Wanderers' fourth.
This saw the introduction of Ian Griffiths and Jamie Ryall, which gave Wokingham
greater attacking threat. Steve Martin and Dave Griffiths fired efforts off target, and Prior failed to test the goalkeeper
when well placed. Ryall then showed good skill on the left, before crossing to Ian Griffiths, who was denied a
header at goal by some good defending.
Ian Griffiths was to have one more chance, as Prior teed him up for a half-volley
which flew narrowly wide of the far post.
Wokingham were to manage one more goal, as Prior finally scored his fifth
to beat Paul Martin's recent four goal haul. Darren Wakley played an excellent forty yard pass over the top, and
Prior ran clear to fire under the Nam 'keeper from close range.
In terms of effort, the scoreline probably flattered the Blues. After
not playing for almost a month, it was important for Wanderers to secure the victory, which they did with relative ease.
