Despite a fairly tame performance against Third Division Syngenta, Wanderers
cruised into the second round of the Junior Cup with an emphatic win. The Blues have now scored 46 goals in their eleven
matches this season.
After a good spell of early pressure, Wanderers took the lead with a well-worked
goal. Ian Griffiths was released on the right and played in Anthony Prior. Prior slid in to reach the ball, and
forced the Syngenta 'keeper into a save, but Tom Soane reached the rebound first to hit the ball into the empty net.
Syngenta's long ball style rarely cause Wokingham problems, but coupled with
a heavy and uneven surface, it made it difficult for the Blues to pass the ball with much fluidity.
Twenty five minutes in and Wanderers scored a second from an unlikely source.
Ian Griffiths' corner was only half-cleared, and right-back Andy Corless found space on the left of the area to curl a well-placed
shot into the far corner.
Chances fell to Tom Soane, Paul Martin, Prior and Clint Falcus before the
half-time whistle sounded, but a combination of wayward shooting and good goalkeeping prevented Wanderers from extending their
advantage.
Nick Harding was enjoying another good game for Wokingham. Though the
Blues were fortunate when a rare spill was deflected onto the underside of the Blues' bar and away to safety.
The Blues raised their efforts in the second-half, helping themselves to five
goals.
Just before the hour, Steve Martin's clearance was flicked onto Paul Martin
by Prior. Martin evaded two challenges before smashing a powerful drive high into the corner of the net.
Minutes later good work by Steve Martin saw his shot blocked, and eventually
Paul Martin was able to place a low shot past the out of position goalkeeper.
Paul Martin completed a fifteen minute hat-trick when Tom Soane cut in from
the right and unselfishly squared a ball for his strike partner to tap home.
The fifth goal saw the introduction of Lewis Trusty and Matt Cook, in place
of Paul Martin and Falcus.
Wanderers were unable to celebrate a clean sheet when a clearance struck
the referee and fell favourably for Syngenta. There was a touch of complacency as Wanderers' allowed their opponents
a chance to shoot at Harding, who was beaten by a dinked shot from close range.
With ten minutes remaining Wanderers were keen to add to their tally.
Trusty's header onto Tom Soane gave him the opportunity to run at goal. After beating his man, Soane finished clinically
from the edge of the area.
A seventh goal was struck with almost the last kick of the match. Ian
Griffiths' low cross picked out Prior, and he set up Trusty. Trusty's shot was saved and then only half-cleared, allowing
Prior to shoot through the 'keeper and into the net.
Wanderers will be expecting a tougher game next weekend, when promotion rivals
Ashridge travel to Cantley.
