Wanderers kicked off their 2006/07 campaign with a home match against BMW
at Cantley. The game saw a new kit, a new home ground, and new players in Nick Harding, Steve Martin and Matt Cook.
The delayed kick-off didn't favour each side, but affect Wanderers in particular,
as they were put through a fairly rigorous warm-up in the intense heat.
As a result the Blues were relatively slow out of the blocks, but improved
and enjoyed some good passing moves.
BMW's approach was very direct, and in the early stages the Blues' defence
coped well, despite not always having the best support from the Wanderers' midfield.
With twenty minutes gone, Richard Scott fed Tom Soane, who hit a powerful
shot just wide of the left upright. A good spell of pressure followed, and despite winning three corners, no goal came.
It was the visitors who took the lead on the half-hour, as a free-header from
a corner was directed low to Harding's right.
BMW then wasted several opportunities to extend their advantage, as the Blues'
back line allowed the BMW forward to evade the offside trap. Harding showed a positive attitude and alertness to close
down the angle on both occasions.
With eight minutes to go until the break Wanderers levelled. Steve Martin
won a header, and Tom Soane stayed on his feet to see off the defender a finish clinically with a low shot in off the far
post. The referee indicated that he would have given a penalty for the challenge, but allowed play to continue for Soane
to score.
This should have given the Blues a big lift heading into the break, and the
second-half. Instead they fell behind again just two minutes into the second period. As the ball bounced around
on the edge of the box, a miss-hit shot rolled beyond Harding into the bottom corner.
Once again Wanderers hit back though. A foul on Tom Soane saw a free-kick
awarded on the right of the BMW box. Prior swung a cross in, and as the BMW defenders struggled to clear,
Scott cleverly diverted an attempted clearance back into the net.
As the final whistle approached, Jamie Ryall came on in place of Scott, with
debutant Cook replacing Phil Soane.
Sadly for Wanderers, they were undone by another set-piece, as Harding was
beaten from close range for BMW to score the winning goal.
Wokingham will be hoping to put the defeat behind them with a victory next
week against 3M.
