Wanderers produced
a convincing display to ease to victory against a poor WCC side at Cantley.
Edward Townsend came
in at right back for his second performance of the season, and Anthony Prior returned from on the left wing.
Ten minutes into
the match, and after a scrappy opening, Prior suffered a recurrence of his hamstring injury. Darren Wakley came on to
replace him.
Even early on in
the game, it was apparent that WCC's game was very one dimensional and direct. Their long passes may have troubled other
sides, but the Blues' defence dealt with the minimal threat with relative ease.
After twenty minutes
Wanderers took the lead. Chris Hillsdon carried the ball out of defence and fed Tom Soane. Soane beat the offside
trap to fire a low shot beyond the 'keeper.
The goal saw the
Blues grow in confidence and there was some good movement down both flanks.
Ten minutes after
scoring their first, Wanderers made it 2-0. Dave Griffiths helped the ball on to Richard Scott, who executed a fine
shot over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net from thirty yards out.
It was very nearly
3-0 before the interval, as Jamie Ryall's pass found Soane again. The Blues' forward lobbed the ball over the WCC goalkeeper,
and was unlucky to see his effort hit the post, then his leg, before bouncing out for a goal kick.
The first fifteen
minutes of the second half saw WCC enjoy their best spell of the game. Despite facing a lot of pressure, Hillsdon and
Clint Falcus remained resolute at the back, whilst Andy Corless and Ed Townsend limited any threat from the flanks.
They were aided by some strong handling from Mark Timms.
With twenty five
minutes remaining, the outcome of the game was decided with a fine team goal. Dave Griffiths played a fine pass to find
Soane on the right. After beating his man, Soane fizzed in a cross which was met by clinical finish from Darren
Wakley.
In Wanderers'
next attack Richard Scott almost grabbed his second as he thundered a shot against the bar from eight yards out.
Full of confidence,
the Blues hit two more goals as WCC collapsed. Man of the match Hillsdon played in Soane for his second. Then
Dave Griffiths played in Soane to complete his hat-trick, with another composed one-on-one finish.
This was a fine Wanderers'
performance which has given the team a much-needed lift. Had it not been for some highly dubious offside calls, the
Blues' would have threatened double figures.
