Wanderers were missing
both Andy Corless and Anthony Prior through injury for the visit of Woodley Hammers Reserves, in what was an important clash
in the race for third place.
A late SOS to Matthew
Elliott, saw him drafted in at centre back to make his first appearance of the season. Chris Hillsdon started at right
back, with Jamie Ryall on the left wing.
In their second colours
of red, Wanderers started fairly brightly. With then minutes played, Tom Soane set up strike partner Richard Scott,
who saw his shot parried away by the goalkeeper.
The Wokingham
defence looked to be holding firm in the opening stages, with Mark Timms tested only once. A dipping shot from
twenty yards was well tipped over by the Wanderers 'keeper.
Midway through the
half, Wanderers took the lead. A move along the right wing saw Ian Griffiths find Scott, who laid off to Tom Soane.
The angle didn't favour Soane, but he delivered a powerful shot into the bottom left corner of the net.
The lead wasn't to
last long though. A lapse in concentration from a throw-in, and a ball across the six yard box was lashed high into
Timms' net.
Wanderers could well
have trailed at the break, but Timms bravely dived at the Woodley forward's feet as it looked like he was past the Wokingham
stopper.
The half time whistle
saw Chris Hillsdon play no further part in the match. An ankle injury proved too much, and Lewis Trusty came on to replace
him.
Trusty's introduction
also saw a change in formation, to a 4-3-3, with Tom Soane pushing onto the right side, and Jamie Ryall dropping in to right
back.
The second half was
disappointing for Wanderers, as the previous night's excesses took their toll.
On the hour mark,
Clint Falcus unfortunately slipped and let in the Woodley forward. Timms was quickly off his line, and although he blocked
the initial shot, the ball was put into an empty net from a tight angle. It was harsh on Falcus, who was one of Wanderers'
better performers in this game.
With twenty five
minutes remaining 2-1 became 3-1. Trusty won a header in the midfield, but with the Wanderers' defence so high up, it
only served to play in the Woodley forward. As Timms advanced from his line, the ball was slipped under him and into
the net.
Minutes later and
the match was wrapped up. A low cross from the Woodley right was powered beyond Timms, for a goal quite similar to the
visitors' first.
Wokingham did have
two chances to get a consolation goal. First Scott saw and effort saved, then Darren Wakley was also denied after great
set up from Ian Griffiths.
This was a day to
forget for Wanderers, who will look to gain some positives from their remaining games, to take into next season.
