Following a dismal
league run of five defeats in their previous seven matches, Wanderers came to struggling Finchampstead, knowing that victory
was crucial.
Richard Scott came
in for his first match since signing from Rides, replacing the Canada-bound Paul Martin. The versatile Jamie Ryall started
at right back, with Andy Corless at left back.
On a fine surface,
the Wanderers passed the ball with confidence and purpose. Early chances fell the way of Anthony Prior and Tom Soane,
but the Finch 'keeper produced two good saves.
Wokingham were dominating
the play, with the midfield duo of Darren Wakley and Dave Griffiths particularly impressive. Their opponents failed
to trouble them, and seemed lacking in attacking options.
After twenty minutes,
the breakthrough came. Tom Soane raced along the right, before finding Scott. As the Finchampstead defence struggled
to clear, the ball deflected off Scott's body into the path of Prior. With time and space, Prior produced a cool finish
into the bottom corner.
The remainder of
the half saw Wanderers raise their game and enjoy plenty of possession. On the left, Corless was getting forward to
great effect, whilst only Finchampstead's dubious offside calls troubled the Blues.
Tom Soane picked
up a caution following one particular suspect decision. He then shot narrowly wide of the goal as the half came to a
close.
The second half saw
Wanderers produce the type of football that made them champions last season. Confidence was clearly flowing.
Having shot narrowly
wide of the target again, Tom Soane forced his way beyond the Finchampstead defence, and lobbed the ball
over the advancing 'keeper for 2-0.
Minutes later and
Wanderers added a third. Ryall passed to Ian Griffiths, who delivered a fantastic cross into the box. Tom Soane's
volley was blocked, but the ball fell into the path of Scott who tapped into the empty net.
As well as playing
some good passing football, Wanderers were also doing the simple things effectively. Chris Hillsdon and Clint
Falcus reduced Finchampstead to very few chances, and Mark Timms showed good handling from several second half corners.
With twenty minutes
remaining, Dave Griffiths headed in Ian Griffiths' corner for Wanderers' fourth goal.
Phil Soane came on
as the final whistle approach. This gave Ryall the opportunity to play on the left wing, and he nearly scored too,
following another fantastic Ian Griffiths' delivery.
It was left to Scott
to wrap up the game, as he touched in Tom Soane's cross from close range.
In their final attack,
Finchampstead forced Timms to save a low shot from the edge of the box. In the end, the 5-0 scoreline was certainly
a fair one. This really was an excellent Wanderers' performance, and one the Blues will hope to carry forward into their
remaining five games.
