Having suffered five
defeats in their previous eight league games, Wanderers were missing four players for their away match with
BMW.
The Blues called
on the services of Scott Ford, who returned to the Wanderers' squad for the first time this season.
In a reshuffled line-up,
Tom Soane started on the left wing, with Anthony Prior joining Jamie Ryall in the middle of midfield. Lewis Trusty partnered
Paul Martin in attack.
On a heavy pitch,
Wanderers began well. After just five minutes, Andy Corless shot just wide following an Ian Griffiths' corner. At the
other end, BMW's intentions were clear as they lofted direct balls to their two forwards. One minute later, Jamie Ryall
shot wide after he had controlled well on the edge of the box.
With twelve minutes
gone, the Blues very nearly took the lead. A flowing move down the Wanderers' right saw Griffiths feed Martin, who crossed for Tom Soane to force the BMW 'keeper to save well.
Five minutes later,
and Wokingham did make the breakthrough. Phil Soane picked up the ball just inside the BMW half, carried it for fifteen
yards, and then picked out Martin's clever run with a wonderful pass. Martin was bundled over and the referee had no
hesitation in awarding the penalty.
After a delay caused
by the referee confirming the penalty spot on the muddy surface, Prior stepped up to send the 'keeper the wrong way for 1-0.
The goal proved a
turning point, not in either sides' respective performances, but in the decisions which the referee would then decide to give.
Ten minutes before
half time the BMW players appealed for a foul outside the area following a Corless tackle. As the referee ignored their
calls, play continued into the area where Corless made another firm challenge. This time it seems, the referee felt
that he had to award the spot kick. To add salt to the wounds, he booked Corless.
Justice appeared
to be done, as Mark Timms dived to his left and pulled off a fantastic save from the kick. However referee Mr Tubb's
eagle eyes had alerted him to Timms apparently straying from this line. The re-take was hit beyond Timms and the scores
were level.
Neither side created
any further chances in the opening period, as they both struggled more with the conditions. The Blues were frustrated
more and more by Mr Tubb's performance, especially when he decided to not even book a BMW player who had pushed Griffiths in the face.
The second half followed
a similar pattern, as Wanderers' passing was severely restricted by the surface. BMW continued to play their direct
style, but Clint Falcus proved himself particularly impressive in a resolute back four.
On the hour mark
came the moment that decided the game. Timms had done well to make a stop from close range. However a combination
of a knee injury, a muddy goalmouth and new gloves saw the ball slip agonisingly out of his grasp before eventually being
scrambled into the back of the net.
The remaining half
hour proved very frustrating as Wanderers attempted to get back into the game. Ford was introduced in place of Trusty,
as Tom Soane moved back up front.
Wokingham had three
chances to equalise in the closing stages of the game. First Corless volleyed narrowly wide, following Ian Griffiths'
corner. Then Ford played an excellent pass to Soane, who cut onto his left foot before shooting against the foot
of the post. Finally, in the last attack of the game, Griffiths' cross was headed over by Martin.
The statistic of
seven wins and seven defeats from Wanderers' fourteen matches is a disappointing one. However the Blues' work rate in
this game did not deserve the loss, as Wokingham struggle to understand how they conceded two goals.
