5th February 2006 - Division 2 - Langborough Rec, Wokingham

Wanderers were hit by another late disappointment, after they appeared to be fully in control against second placed Keltar Old Boys.

Despite missing Mark Timms in goal, and Chris Orbell through illness, Wanderers produced a confident first half display.  The Blues almost took the lead after just five minutes.  Anthony Prior met Ian Griffiths’ corner with a firm header, which beat the Keltar ‘keeper only to be headed off the line.

The Wanderers’ back four did well to contain Keltar and offered stand-in ‘keeper Lewis Trusty good protection, as the away side were reduced to several wayward long-range shots in the opening period.

After twenty minutes Jamie Ryall tested the Keltar goalkeeper as he surged forward from his right back position, cut inside, and fired in a left-footed shot which was saved as it headed into the top corner.

With fifteen minutes to go until half-time, Wanderers made the breakthrough.  After his first corner was cleared behind, Ian Griffiths hit a precise cross towards the near post where Darren Wakley guided a header into the back of the net.

In the second half, Wanderers put more pressure on Keltar.  On the hour mark it was 2-0.  Prior’s corner was met by a thumping Dave Griffiths’ header, who out-jumped the ‘keeper to score.

Minutes later, another Prior corner was headed narrowly wide by Andy Corless.  Clint Falcus came on the replace the injured Tom Soane, with Wanderers reverting to a 4-5-1 formation.

Just when it looked as though the points were safe for the Blues, Keltar found a way back into the match.  A corner bounced around the Wanderers’ box and was eventually headed in from close range.

With five minutes remaining, Keltar equalised, as their forward was given too much space on the edge of the box and was able to turn and shoot past Trusty.

There was only a minute left on the clock when Keltar snatched the harshest of victories.  As the ball moved in-field from Keltar’s right, Trusty was left exposed and despite a good point-blank save, the rebound was hit in for a sickening winner.

TEAM:  Lewis Trusty, Jamie Ryall, Chris Hillsdon, Andy Corless, Phil Soane, Ian Griffiths, Dave Griffiths, Darren Wakley, Anthony Prior, Tom Soane, Paul Martin.  SUB: Clint Falcus (for T Soane).
