Wanderers were made to pay for a disappointing first half performance, as
they suffered their first home defeat in just under a year. Mark Timms was ruled out through injury, and so Allan Mellor
started in goal, in the only change from last week's win against Finchampstead.
The Blues struggled to get into the opening period, and Green Man dominated
the early exchanges. For Wanderers, Paul Martin battled hard in attack, chasing down every ball. With twenty five
minutes gone, the game was still goalless.
Wokingham were then hit by two goals in ten minutes. The first was a
scrappy effort after Wanderers lost possession. Eventually Mellor was left exposed and although the shot was poorly
struck, it rolled across the line.
The second Green Man goal was a better strike, but Wanderers will be disappointed
with the space given on the corner of the area from the Green Man right.
Into the second half and Wanderers found the spirit. Having reverted
to a 4-5-1 formation after the
second Green Man goal, Anthony Prior and Ian Griffiths were able to get into the game more and cause problems
down either flank. Martin's work rate was again excellent, however the Blues' improvement did not see the
Green Man goal troubled.
On the hour mark Wanderers had the chance to get back into the game.
Prior ran down the left and diverted the ball to Martin, who was hauled down inside the box. Prior stepped up to fire
the ball into the top left hand corner of the net.
The goal helped the Blues to kick on, and the introduction
of Clint Falcus and Tom Mansfield helped keep the Wanderers midfield fresh.
Wokingham's quest for an equaliser presented Green Man with a great chance
for a third goal, as a ball over the top cleared the Blues' back line. Allan Mellor produced a great
close-range save, to keep Wanderers in the game.
With twenty minutes to go, Wanderers were nearly level. A poor clearance
from Green Man was headed through to Martin by Prior. Martin saw the far corner, but shot agonisingly wide as the
Green Man 'keeper came out.
In a desperate attempt to get back on level terms, Wanderers went back
to 4-4-2 as Lewis Trusty came on for Dave Griffiths.
As the game moved into the last ten minutes, Wanderers were finally killed
off. A Green Man counter-attack saw the ball crossed from the right, and fired past Mellor.
In the closing minutes Prior shot wide of the goal, and Wanderers were
left facing defeat. Despite the loss, Wanderers can be proud of the second-half performance, when lesser teams would
have collapsed.
