A month after securing the title, Wanderers finally got to play their final
match of the season at Rides United.
It was always going to be difficult for the Blues to carry on the momentum
given to them by their five successive wins as they closed in on the championship. Wanderers' cause wasn't helped by
the late withdrawals of Andy Corless and Scott Ford.
As the game kicked off, Wanderers only had ten players on the field.
With Dan van der Laan O'Donnell getting ready on the side of the pitch, Tom Mansfield partnered Clint Falcus in a makeshift
defence.
Wokingham barely had time to get going as Rides began a relentless assault
on their goal. Within eight minutes Wanderers were behind. Rides punished the Blues' failure to clear, and Allan
Mellor was left with no chance as the ball was lashed into the bottom corner of the net from ten yards.
Wanderers lacked any real cutting edge, and struggled to pass the ball with
any purpose. Up front, Tom Soane and Paul Martin worked hard and linked up well, when given the opportunity.
After fifteen minutes, the Blues found a way back into the game with a goal
that was out of keeping with their performance. A long-ball forward dropped over Soane's shoulder and as it sat
up he smashed a powerful shot into the top corner.
This should have seen Wanderers raise their game and show their championship
pedigree. However, five minutes later the ball was in the back of the Blues' net. A quick pass left Wokingham
exposed on their left, and Mellor was beaten with a low curling shot from the angle.
The Blues were fortunate not to go further behind as a scrap in the penalty
area ended with a shot blasted against the post. Wanderers were unable to produce any other chances in the half, and
only a questionable booking for Soane stood out as a talking point.
