Wanderers kicked off the season in style with a convincing victory against
a poor Duke's Head side.
It took Wokingham fifteen minutes to make their mark on the game, as their
opponents failed to clear a corner and Andy Corless slid in to power the ball into the net from close range.
Matthew Elliott almost immediately made it 2-0, but his fierce left-footed
drive from twenty yards was palmed away by the Duke's Head goalkeeper.
The second goal arrived minutes later however when Ian Griffiths beat his
man before crossing for Tom Soane to meet the ball at the near post and volley into the corner of the net.
This was a powerful Wanderers display, with Chris Hillsdon, Corless, Dan van
der Laan O'Donnell and Chris Orbell a formidable barrier for much of the half.
Soane turned provider after twenty five minutes, as he threaded a
ball through to Anthony Prior, who beat the goalkeeper for Wanderers' third.
It was the Griffiths-Soane combination that saw Wanderers go 4-0 up before
the interval, Griffiths' fine twenty yard pass
was controlled by Soane and lashed beyond the 'keeper.
There was some disappointment though as Duke's Head scored a goal with the
last kick of the opening period, heading in after Allan Mellor had made a superb point-blank save when left exposed.
Into the second-half and Wanderers were quick to regain their four-goal lead.
A free-kick was awarded just inside the Duke's Head half and Prior floated the ball to the far post where Corless headed home.
Wanderers caused their opponents all over the park, with Tom Mansfield and
Scott Ford linking well in the centre as Wokingham enjoyed some good possession.
The Duke's Head did score a second, on the rare occasion that a ball
into the box was not dealt with, and Mellor was left with no chance.
This only served to fire up Wanderers, who scored a sixth when substitute
Clint Falcus bundled the ball over the line after Prior had flicked on Griffiths' corner.
Six became seven in the closing stages, as Prior exploited some poor defending
to beat the goalkeeper at the second attempt.
This was a great start for Wokingham and a statement of intent from the team
for what looks certain to be a successful season.
