29th April 2003 - Division 4 - Barkham Rec. Wokingham

Wanderers came to the end of a gruelling league schedule of 3 games in 6 days when they faced Ashridge Park Reserves at Barkham Rec.

Lewis Trusty became the eighth Wanderers goalkeeper of the season, with Alan Mellor still unfit.  There was also a rare start on the left wing for Owen "Rocket" Holland.

Wokingham began strongly and created some good chances.  Anthony Prior was released down the left cut inside and then back out, taking on five players before hitting a low shot which was saved to the keepers left.  Tom Soane then dragged a shot wide and minutes later, could only touch on a Scott Ford cross.

Jamie Ryall almost scored with a header and Prior had an overhead kick blocked as Wanderers continued in their pursuit of the opening goal.

When it came it was from a surprise source.  Chris Hillsdon cleared and Holland ran through unchallenged.  As the goalkeeper came out he lifted the ball superbly over his dive and celebrated his first ever goal.

However disaster soon followed, as Orbell was harshly adjudged to have fouled in the box and the home side were awarded a penalty.  Lewis Trusty pulled off a great save to his right to maintain Wokinghams advantage.

In the second half and conditions were difficult with heavy rain and diminishing light.  Midway through the half Ashridge scored a controversial equaliser as the referee ignored the flag of the linesman.

With fifteen minutes remaining Tom Soane was put through but was brought down on the edge of the box.  The decision, red card and a free kick to Wanderers, which Ford blasted straight at the wall.

In Wanderers' next attack Van der Laan-O'Donnell found Prior on the halfway line, he held the ball up and then released Tom Soane who finished in style.

Two minutes later a Mark Devenny corner was headed in by Scott Ford to seal the victory.

With almost the last kick of the game Tom Soane ran clear and produced a cheeky finished to hammer the final nail into Ashridge's coffin.
