Wanderers hoped to build on the recent improvement in their performance as they faced Ascot United Reserves.
Alan Mellor in goal was protected by a defence
of Chris Hillsdon, Clint Faclus. Dan Van der Laan-O'Donnell and returning captain Phil Soane.
Stu Orbell replaced the absent Alan Pearce on the
right of midfield as Andy Kinch and Scott Ford continued in the middle of the park.
Jamie Ryall covered the left wing. Tom Soane and Anthony Prior continued
up front.
The Blues
started positively and both Prior and Ford went close with early headers. Wanderers
battled doggedly and were resolute in defence with Van der Laan-O'Donnell leading the defensive line admirably.
With twenty minutes played Ford threaded a magnificent
pass through Tom Soane who turned well before being cynically taken down in the area.
Prior stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way as he dispatched the resulting spot-kick.
As has so often been the case for Wanderers this
season, they lost their lead very quickly. An Ascot corner was headed in at the
far post to level matters before the interval.
Into the second half and Ascot started to put pressure
on Wanderers but found Alan Mellor in inspired form. It was cruel on Mellor when
fifteen minutes into the half, he saved a shot only to have the rebound headed beyond his dive.
Earlier on the season this would have been the
cue for the floodgates to open but in recent weeks Wanderers have proved to be a more resilient and determined side. With twenty-five minutes remaining they won a free kick on the halfway line which
Clint Falcus floated into the box. The ball drifted over the Ascot defence to
Prior, who controlled and smashed the ball into the corner of the net.
Five minutes later a clever pass from Chris Hillsdon
released Tom Soane who beat the offside trap to calmly slot the ball past the Ascot keeper to put Wanderers back in front.
In their next attack Jamie Ryall hit a right footed
cross from the left wing which Prior headed into the net for his hat-trick. 4
- 2 to Wanderers.
Shortly afterwards, Owen Holland came on for Prior. Ryall moved into attack and Holland took his place on the left wing.
With five minutes of the match left, a goalmouth
scramble saw Ascot pull a goal back but Wanderers held on for victory.
