19th January 2003 - Division 4 - Langborough Rec.

Following their 6 - 3 victory against Bracknell Wanderers, Wokingham had to wait and wait for their next game, against Wokingham Cricket Club.

Alan Mellor continued in goal, with a defence of Chris Hillsdon, Clint Faclus, Dan Van der Laan-ODonnell and Chris Orbell in front of him.

Jamie Ryall started on the right wing, with Mark Devenny on the left and Andy Kinch partnering Anthony Prior in a new-look midfield.

Alan Pearce and Lewis Trusty, who had scored four goals between them in the Bracknell match, again started in attack.

Wanderers made a confident start and passed the ball around, enjoying some good early possession.  The breakthrough came when Van der Laan-ODonnell headed the ball out of defence, towards the halfway line.

Anthony Prior beat the Cricket Club right back to the ball, knocking it over his head and past another defender.  As the goalkeeper rushed out, Prior kept his cool and chipped the ball over his dive and under the crossbar.

It wasnt long before the self-destruct button was pressed as a Cricket Club player ran unchallenged to fire past a despairing Mellor for the equaliser.

Into the second half and Wanderers fell behind as they failed to deal with a cross and the ball was tapped in to put the Cricket Club ahead.

Wanderers piled on the pressure but could not find an equaliser as there were chances for Prior, Trusty and Tom Soane.

However, with fifteen minutes remaining a long clearance from Van der Laan-ODonnell found Prior just inside the Cricket Club half.  He battled past his man and with the goalkeeper rushing out, curled the ball into the empty net with the outside of his right foot.

The equaliser fired Wanderers up and they went all out for the winner, with Tom Soane putting a shot narrowly wide of the goal.

It didnt look like the match would end in a draw and so it proved as Wanderers failure to deal with a cross was again punished by a Cricket Club goal.

Wanderers did not deserve anything from this match and not for the first time this season left the pitch frustrated.
