Having not played since the end of November, this was a physical test for
Wanderers against Second Division leaders Rides United.
Wokingham's lack of football was evident as the visitors started brightly.
Following a couple of promising attacks they took the lead after eight minutes. A low cross from the left evaded
everyone and was tapped home at the far post.
Wanderers came into the game more and found an equaliser midway through the
half. Anthony Prior controlled a clearance in the middle of the Rides' half and played a well weighted pass through
to Paul Martin. Martin showed good strength to out-muscle a defender and prodded a shot under the advancing goalkeeper
and into the net.
The equaliser helped to settle the Blues, who found their rhythm. Lewis
Trusty fired two long range efforts wide of the goal as Wanderers looked to take the lead.
It was Rides who scored the next goal though. A through-ball beat the
offside trap and Harding was beaten at his near post.
Rides held their lead going into the break.
In the second half Wanderers pressed for an equaliser and scored it on the
hour mark. A counter-attack saw Jamie Ryall pass to Prior. Prior moved the ball onto Ian Griffiths who was quick
to spot Martin in space. He obliged with a typically cool finish to level the game.
The Blues were quick to push for another goal and scored just two minutes
later. A fine team move saw Simon Reip pass to Dave Griffiths and he unselfishly squared for Ian Griffiths to fire home
from six yards.
Wokingham were unable to hold their advantage for long as a cross from the
right was inadvertently deflected past Harding by Dave Griffiths.
There was to be one more goal and it was to go to Wanderers. Another
counter-attack following a Rides corner saw Prior pass to Martin. After some initial good fortune Martin raced clear
and rounded the goalkeeper to score the winner and complete his hat-trick.
Late Rides' pressure was negated by good handling from Harding and Wokingham
secured their progress to the fourth round. They will face Purple Turtle for a place in the fifth round.
