WANDERERS WON 7-6 ON PENALTIES

11th November 2007 - Berks and Bucks Sunday Junior Cup - Cantley, Wokingham

Wanderers faced Second Division BMW in the second round of the County Cup, and made things difficult for themselves in the first half.

Nick Harding returned in goal, and Steve Martin came in to replace the injured Chris Hillson.  Paul Martin and Ian Griffiths were also available for Wokingham.

The visitors enjoyed a good start and took a surprise lead after ten minutes.  Good link-up play saw Harding exposed and the ball was fired beyond him into the net.

Wokingham's task was made harder midway through the half when Simon Reip fouled in the box and BMW scored the resulting penalty.

Before the break Wanderers raised their game and Ian Griffiths had a shot saved after he played a neat one-two with Anthony Prior.

Prior's corner from the right just missed the head of Reip as Wokingham sought a way back into the match.

In the second-half Wokingham played with much more fluidity and kept the ball well.

On the hour mark awarded Wanderers a free-kick on the edge of the box and Ian Griffiths' deflected effort made the score 2-1.

Wokingham quickly equalised.  Prior's free-kick from the right was met by a powerful header from Simon Reip.

The comeback nearly became academic at the death, but Nick Harding saved well from a headed effort from BMW.

Extra-time saw only one meaningful effort from either side.  Prior had a firm shot saved by the 'keeper.  Whilst BMW smashed a shot against the bar.

So to penalties.  Wanderers had only been involved in a shoot-out twice previously and had lost on both occasions.

BMW took first and scored.  Prior stepped up to level for Wanderers, with a shot low to the goalkeeper's right.

The visitors scored their second kick.  Paul Martin did the same for Wokingham, sending the 'keeper the wrong way and finding the bottom corner.

BMW kept the 100% record going, though Harding was close to this effort.  Steve Martin drilled in his kick to make it 3-3.

The seventh kick was converted by BMW and Matt Pegg levelled again with the best strike, hit high to the right.

BMW scored once more to make it 5-4.  Harding himself then scored as his kick just missed the goalkeeper's legs on the way in,

The shoot-out seemed like it would go on for some time as BMW took the score to 6-5.  Simon Reip scored confidently to level once again.

The tie was then effectively settled as Harding produced the first save of the contest, diving to his right to parry the shot away.  Ian Griffiths stepped up to win it for Wokingham with a composed effort.

Hopefully Wokingham can take these battling qualities into the upcoming matches against league high-flyers Emmbrook Inn.
