Wokingham made it two wins from two at home against a spirited Wroxton side.
Wanderers were missing Steve Martin and Phil Soane, but their opponents could
only field 10 players for the match. As a result, the Blues found themselves up against a very defensively minded side.
Wokingham started the match in a positive fashion. Good passing and
movement created two early opportunities for Paul Martin, both of which drifted narrowly wide of goal.
Dave Griffiths then picked out Anthony Prior, but his shot also just missed
the target.
The breakthrough came after twenty minutes. Paul Martin held off two
challenges before playing the ball across to Tom Soane, who evaded the offside trap to slide home from 8 yards out.
Minutes later and Wanderers added to their lead. A counter-attack saw
Prior pick the ball up on the halfway line, then slip a good pass through to Soane, who finished calmly into the bottom right
hand corner.
Towards the end of the first half complacency seemed to set in. Passes
were overcomplicated and Wanderers were unable to increase their advantage. Before the interval they were to concede.
Andy Corless cleared with a high pass to Dave Griffiths on the edge of Blues' box. He struggled to control,
and the ball fell kindly for a Wroxton player to smash under Harding and into the goal.
The second half saw Wanderers start positively, with more running at their opponents.
However no real chances were created in the fifteen minutes that followed the break.
Wroxton were managing to attack more than in the first half, and grabbed a
controversial equaliser with twenty five minutes remaining. Nick Harding seemed to have the ball in both hands when
a Wroxton player kicked it out of them. The ensuing scramble saw a shot go into the Blues' net via the post.
Wokingham had to raise their game as they looked to secure a victory that
looked like it was going to come easily. Lewis Trusty played in Prior, but his shot went over the Wroxton goal.
With fifteen minutes to go Jamie Ryall's corner was not cleared properly and
Paul Martin shaped himself well to volley into the goal from ten yards out. The Wroxton defender scrambled the ball
away, but was a clear two yards behind the line.
The victory was ensured with the best goal of the game. A good move
saw Paul Martin released on the left. His accurate cross was met by a diving header from Anthony Prior, that flashed
beyond the 'keeper and into the net.
Wokingham made very hard work of this win. Wroxton deserve credit for
the way that they battled. Wanderers will have to increase their efforts next week when they travel to Winkfield, where
they were defeated 6-1 last season.
