Wanderers started their season with a deserved victory against Keltar Old
Boys.
With Dave Griffiths and Anthony Prior injured, the Blues started with Tom
Soane on the right and Lewis Trusty up front. Clint Falcus moved into midfield as Matt Pegg made his debut at centre
back.
The first fifteen minutes were fairly evenly contested, with Keltar only really
causing problems through one of their midfielders. Wokingham started to pass the ball around well, but failed to
create any early chances.
It was the visitors who struck first. A move down their left wing left
the Blues slightly exposed, and as Andy Corless dived in it allowed a through-ball to be made to the Keltar forward.
Nick Harding advanced from his goal quickly but was beaten by a low shot under his dive.
Wanderers immediately created an opportunity themselves. Good work from
Paul Martin fed Tom Soane, who shot at the goalkeeper from fifteen yards.
At the other end debutante Pegg tidied up a Keltar attack well with assistance
from Harding.
Wokingham came close to finding an equaliser on three occasions before the
interval. First Steve Martin and Paul Martin combined well to create an opening, and the latter hit a fierce shot that
bounced down off the underside of the crossbar. Then Trusty set up Martin again, only for the Keltar 'keeper to deny
him with a good save to his left.
As the interval approached it was Pegg's turn to go close, his header from
a Steve Martin corner bounced twice off the crossbar before going behind.
Another Martin corner from the left was just missed by Andy Corless, who had
made a well-timed run to the far post.
The second half was a very different story, and Wanderers were quick to draw
level. Once again Steve Martin provided the assist for brother Paul, who eased past the last defender before hitting
a composed shot into the bottom corner.
Minutes later and Wokingham took the lead. Corless' throw-in from the
right was flicked on by Trusty, and Martin fired back across goal and into the corner of the net with another fine finish.
As Keltar struggled to come to terms with the turnaround, the Blues struck
again as Paul Martin completed his hat-trick. Pegg's long ball forward found the Wanderers' forward and he slotted
home with ease.
Wokingham then had a chance to put the game beyond their opponents.
Steve Martin's cross from behind was turned just over the bar by Matt Pegg sliding in.
Five minutes later and Keltar pulled it back to 3-2. A corner wasn't
cleared properly, and Harding was beaten by a low shot to his right.
The Blues went straight up the other end and Phil Soane fed Tom Soane, who
shot just wide of the far post.
It was then Keltar's turn to miss the target. The match looked like
it could go either way.
Substitute Jamie Ryall then played a big part in clinching victory for the
Blues. His run into the box was picked out and although the Keltar 'keeper stopped his shot, Paul Martin turned in from
an acute angle to score his and Wanderers' fourth.
There was still time for Keltar to score a third goal. A counter-attack
left the Blues' defence exposed and as everyone anticipated the pass, the Keltar forward produced an excellent chip over the
advancing Harding.
With almost the final kick of the game a good move saw Harding find Corless,
who fed Tom Soane for one last chance to get on the scoresheet. Once again his shot went agonisingly wide of the far
post.
This was a good display from Wanderers, and a perfect start to the new campaign.
The Blues face a tougher contest next week, away to Sunninghill Athletic.
