11th March 2007 - Division 2 - Wildridings, Bracknell

Wanderers were severely short of numbers as they faced BMW, hoping to avenge their opening day defeat to the Bracknell side.  Phil Soane, Dave Griffiths, Ian Griffiths, Darren Wakley, Andy Corless and Matt Cook were all unavailable, leaving Wokingham with just eleven players.  They discovered that their opponents were only able to field ten, but still had to change their formation.

Steve Martin dropped back to centre back, leaving Jamie Ryall and Anthony Prior as wing backs.  Jon Mercer made his first start in centre midfield, alongside Lewis Trusty and Richard Scott.  Paul Martin and Tom Soane started in attack.

Wanderers began the match well and passed the ball confidently.  The first opportunity of the match fell to Clint Falcus.  Ryall's fine free-kick into the box allowed the Blues' centre back a free-header, which he was unable to direct on goal.

Fifteen minutes into the game and Wanderers had a deserved lead.  Paul Martin was released on the right wing, and took his time before floating an excellent cross to the far post.  Prior met the ball well, and sent a powerful header into the gap between goalkeeper and post.

BMW were offering very little to threaten Wokingham.  On a long pitch their direct style afforded Wanderers plenty of room to prevent a shot at goal, and Hillsdon, Steve Martin and Prior all put in good challenges in the first half.

There were twenty five minutes on the clock when Wanderers went 2-0.  Anthony Prior intercepted a pass from the BMW right back and played a pass through to Tom Soane.  With one defender to beat, Soane took his time before calmly placing a low shot into the corner of the net.

Soon after Soane's strike the match became ten against ten as Jon Mercer limped off with a nasty-looking injury.

Wokingham failed to add to their tally before half-time, with Jamie Ryall hitting a free-kick into the wall just before the break.

The second half saw BMW adopt a dirty style, with many late challenges going unpunished.  Paul Martin was the biggest victim of foul play, and eventually one of BMW's more persistent offenders was cautioned.

Wanderers killed the game off with two goals within ten minutes midway through the half.  Steve Martin's pass through to Paul Martin saw a race between forward and goalkeeper, which the Blues' attacker won by sliding the ball into the back of the net.

Martin's second again came courtesy of his brother, when Tom Soane was prevented from running onto Steve Martin's pass by the offside trap, and Martin ran from deep to calmly round the 'keeper and slot home.

The Blues could have added further goals as Martin earlier missed the target, and Richard Scott skied when one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

BMW had several shots at goal but Nick Harding was equal to every one of them.  Harding's late run out of goal added some much-needed entertainment to the contest.  A late kick to Harding's face summed up BMW's approach to the match, which suggested that Anger Management therapy would be of use to several of their players.

Wokingham will be pleased to get back to winning ways, and gives them a boost ahead of their match with Rides United Reserves next weekend.
