4th February 2007 - Division 2 - Cantley, Wokingham

Wanderers finally picked up their first win of 2007 with a comfortable victory over Finchampstead.

With Darren Wakley still absent through illness, it was captain Dave Griffiths' turn to deputise at left back.  A 4-5-1 formation saw Lewis Trusty and Richard Scott join Steve Martin in midfield.

Wokingham began well, and made it difficult for Finchampstead to play their long-ball style.

The first opportunity of the match fell the way of Ian Griffiths, who fired wide of the near post following a good Wanderers' move.

Griffiths was to make up for his error in the twelfth minute.  Tom Soane chased down a backpass, and the goalkeeper could only clear straight to Griffiths, who calmly lifted the ball over him and into the empty net.

Wokingham nearly extender their advantage as Andy Corless broke forward and crossed from the right.  His low cross saw an instinctive Anthony Prior header hit the side-netting.

Minutes later Ian Griffiths grabbed his second goal.  A high cross from the right from Tom Soane was headed into the net by Griffiths, although the Finchampstead 'keeper will be disappointed with his effort to keep the ball out.

With fifteen minutes of the half remaining, Wanderers made it 3-0.  Following a foul on the halfway line, Clint Falcus delivered a fine free-kick.  Dave Griffiths controlled well, before firing a right-footed shot beyond the 'keeper and into the corner of the net.

Tom Soane was working very hard for the Blues' cause, and after Dave Griffiths had cleared, Prior played Soane through on goal, he rounded the goalkeeper.  Faced with an acute angle, Soane pulled the ball back for Ian Griffiths to complete his hat-trick.

Despite Wanderers' dominance, it was the visitors who scored the last goal before the break.  The Finchampstead forward scrapping his way past two challenges, and hitting a shot through Nick Harding and just over the line.

The Blues started the second half as they had played in the first, and scored a very good team goal within five minutes of the restart.  Falcus stopped a Finchampstead attack and found Richard Scott with a fine thirty yard pass.  Scott turned and picked out Tom Soane's run on the right of the Finchampstead penalty area.  With the goalkeeper advancing, Soane squared the ball for Prior to tap home.  The move was incisive and Finchamptead could do nothing to stop it.

Wokingham's chances of securing a big win seemed to be hit by the dismissal of Steve Martin.  After contesting for the ball, Martin reacted angrily to a challenge and was shown red.  Strangely the Finchampstead player escaped without even a booking.

Finchampstead used their numerical advantage and scored a second goal, courtesy of Clint Falcus' boot.  A low cross across the six yard box was deflected over Harding and into the corner of the net.

The visitors didn't look like finding a way back into the match, and soon they were picking the ball out of their own net.  Richard Scott capitalised on a sloppy clearance, and beat the goalkeeper with a composed finish into the bottom corner.

Wanderers made three changes as Phil Soane, Jamie Ryall and Paul Martin replaced Trusty, Scott and Prior.

The Blues added two more goals before the final whistle.  The first came after Ian Griffiths' corner from the right, which was eventually scrambled over the line by David Griffiths.

Having struck the crossbar with a powerful shot minutes earlier, Tom Soane was the deserved scored of Wokingham's eighth goal.  Again, Finchampstead failed to clear and Soane stabbed the ball into the corner of the net after great work by Corless to drive the ball back across goal.

This was a confident performance from Wokingham, and one which hopefully the Blues can build upon when they face leaders Winkfield next week.
