12th November 2006 - Division 2 - Woodford Park, Woodley

Wanderers were once again missing players as they faced Woodley Hammers, desperate to get their season going again.

Paul Martin, Steve Martin and Andy Corless were all absent, though a late dash from the airport enabled Phil Soane and Ian Griffiths to get onto the bench.

Matthew Cook started at right back for Wanderers, with Chris Orbell pushing up to right midfield, and Jamie Ryall moving into the centre.

The match started off in a scrappy fashion, with several players losing their footing in the opening minutes.  Wanderers struggled to pass the ball for a while, whilst their opponents managed two shots from distance but were unable to test Nick Harding.

The Blues were very fortunate not to fall behind when Darren Wakley's header back was pounced upon.  With Nick Harding caught out, the Woodley forward had an open goal in front of him, but somehow Chris Hillsdon stretched to complete an excellent last-ditch tackle.

After Tom Soane had struck wide of the goal, Wanderers broke the deadlock with twenty minutes played.  Chris Orbell played a fine pass into the path of Soane, who was dispossesed by a Woodley defender.  As the ball bobbled around on the edge of the box, Anthony Prior came in and worked space well, before driving a low shot into the net via the far post.

The goal gave Wanderers a lift, and almost immediately Tom Soane cut inside from the right, and forced the goalkeeper to save with a curling shot.

On the stroke of half-time Woodley almost snatched an equaliser.  A free-kick on the edge of the box struck the Wokingham wall and looped onto the top of the Blues' crossbar.

Wanderers had the perfect start to the second half as they extended their advantage.  Richard Scott struck a shot from twenty yards, that was spilled by the Woodley 'keeper.  Anthony Prior reacted quickest and slotted home his second of the game.

A third Wokingham goal nearly followed, as Prior's cross into the box was met by Soane, who struck the crossbar.

Within two minutes it was 3-0.  Clint Falcus picked the ball up in his own half, and waited before playing a pass beyond the Woodley defence for Tom Soane.  Another goalkeeping error presented Soane with a chance, and he battled well before finally bundling the ball over the line from close range.

Wokingham then relaxed too much, and were punished by two Woodley goals.  The first saw a ball played from the right and into the middle, before releasing a Woodley midfielder, who beat Harding at his near post from eight yards out.

Then with just ten minutes remaining another run down the right ended with a low shot sneaking under Harding and into the far corner.

Woodley then had a 'goal' disallowed for offiside, before Wokingham secured the points.  Ian Griffiths' pass from the right played in Tom Soane, who bravely challenged the goalkeeper and lobbed a shot into the net.

This wasn't a particularly convincing perfromance from the Blues, but it was a vital three points.  Chris Hillsdon and Dave Griffiths played well for Wokingham, and Matt Cook deputised well at the back.
