5th November 2006 - Division 2 - Cantley, Wokingham

With Phil Soane and Ian Griffiths already missing, Wanderers were rocked by the absence of Andy Corless, Paul Martin and Chris Orbell for the visit of high-flying Winkfield.

Jamie Ryall filled in at right-back, with Tom Soane ahead of him on the right wing.  Anthony Prior returned on the left, with Lewis Trusty partnering Richard Scott in attack.

Wanderers had the worst possible start as they found themselves a goal down within the first five minutes.  A ball over the top wasn't cleared, and the Winkfield forward capitalised on a mix-up between Chris Hillsdon and Nick Harding.

The goal clearly gave Winkfield confidence for a short period, as they passed the ball out to both wings to great effect.  Wokingham's back four became more settled, and were helped out my some alert goalkeeping from Harding.

Wokingham's line-up dictated their style, and as the half went on they played some good football.  Dave Griffiths and Steve Martin worked hard in the middle of midfield, whilst Scott and Trusty helped link up play in regularly finding the runs of wingers Tom Soane and Prior.

As half-time approached, Wanderers were starting to get on top and cause Winkfield further problems.  A positive run forward by Ryall saw the ball run to Martin.  He scrambled past a challenge and threaded a ball to Dave Griffiths.  As the defender approached Griffiths played a perfectly weighted pass to Prior, who took a touch before stroking the ball past the Winkfield goalkeeper and into the net.

Both teams started the second-half in a purposeful manner, as first Wanderers and then Winkfield attacked from the whistle.

Nick Harding was Wokingam's saviour on several occasions, as he rushed out to reach Winkfield's passes over the Blues' back four.  At the other end Steve Martin played in Tom Soane on the right, and he cut into the box before forcing the goalkeeper into a good save low to his right.

With the match reaching a close, both sides had efforts on goal.  Richard Scott's free-kick was saved, whilst Prior also tested the 'keeper from distance.  Wanderers' bare eleven inevitably tired as Winkfield introduced three substitutes, and the Blues' were thankful for their opponents missing the target twice from good positions.

It seemed as though Wanderers' battling players had done enough to claim a point, and deprive Winkfield of another maximum return.  However an attack down the Winkfield right saw a low cross turned beyond Harding at the near post.  This was harsh on the Blues, who had shown great determination in making this an even contest.

Wokingham will look forward to a larger squad next week as they face strugglers Woodley.  Once again there is a feeling of frustration in thinking about what might have been, had Wokingham not been hit by three late withdrawals.
