29th October 2006 - Division 2 - Cantley, Wokingham

Wanderers produced a fine second half display to take their league goals tally to thirty, and thirteen in two matches.

The first half saw Wokingham play the better football, but only manage one goal.

Good work by Steve Martin set up the first real chance for Tom Soane, who shot over the bar.

A better chance went begging minutes later.  Paul Martin tricked his way past a defender and cut the ball back across goal, where Ian Griffiths shot over the bar from just a few yards out.

On a poor surface, Queen's Head long ball approach made it difficult for Wanderers to pass the ball in the first half.

The home side had a lucky escape courtesy of some generous refereeing on the half hour.  Phil Soane chased down a clearance upfield, and beat the slow moving Queen's Head 'keeper to the ball.  As Soane touched the ball away from him, he was brought down.  Wanderers were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box, but no card was shown to the goalkeeper.

Richard Scott's free-kick deflected off the wall and looped into the air.  As the ball came down inside the six yard box, Steve Martin reacted quickest and stooped to head home his first Wanderers' goal.

The second half saw Wanderers' superior ability and fitness shine through.  Ian Griffiths redeemed himself for his earlier miss by turning provider.  His excellent low pass from the right fed Paul Martin, who calmly side-footed past the goalkeeper for 2-0.

A third goal quickly followed, and this was all Paul Martin's own work.  He cut in from the right, beating two defenders before striking a powerful shot in off the near post.

Queen's Head had very little to offer in return.  The Blues' back five had put in a disciplined performance to prevent any chances.  A rare lapse did let in a Queen's Head forward, but Nick Harding capped a fine personal display by quickly charging the effort down.

There was a worry for Wanderers when Tom Soane went down injured after a heavy challenge.  Richard Scott was moved up front as Dave Griffiths came on to replace the injured forward.

After Chris Hillsdon ended his drought last week, Phil Soane was determined to follow suit.  Soane ran tirelessly to get into good positions during the match, and this seemed to pay off when Ian Griffiths' cross towards Soane saw the ball hit into the net from close range.  After celebrations indicated he had scored, he later confessed that it was an own goal.

Wanderers introduced Jamie Ryall and Andy Corless, and both settled into the match immediately and linked up well going forward.  Corless was harshly adjudged to have fouled a Queens' Head defender, as he headed for Dave Griffiths to find the net.

It was left to Paul Martin to complete the emphatic victory with his fourth goal of the game.  A free-kick from Wanderers' right was only half-cleared, and Martin struck a fine shot into the corner of the net from the edge of the box.

Wokingham seem to have regained their form, and will be looking forward to next week's clash with leaders Winkfield.
