22nd October 2006 - Division 2 - Cantley, Wokingham

Wanderers needed a good performance following their poor run of three successive defeats, and they managed to produce it against AFC Nam.

Wokingham started well, and took the lead after ten minutes.  Darren Wakley switched play from left back, and found Anthony Prior.  Prior evaded one challenge and pulled the ball back to Tom Soane, and after Soane's strike was saved, Prior struck a low left-footed shot beyond the goalkeeper and defender on the line.

Wanderers took confidence from the early goal, and kept putting pressure on the Nam goal.  Wakley and Phil Soane were linking up well on the left, whilst Richard Scott and Steve Martin kept picking out the runs of Tom Soane and Paul Martin.

Fifteen minutes in, good work my Martin saw the ball worked back to Phil Soane, who produced a fine cross into the box.  With the Nam defenders out of position, Prior directed a firm header towards the corner of the net, which the Nam 'keeper did well to tip around the post.  From the resulting Richard Scott corner Chris Hillsdon nodded in his first ever goal, in his 95th game for the Blues.

With two goals already on the board, Wanderers played some good football.  Nam occasionally threatened, but were kept at bay by some solid defending, particularly from Chris Orbell at right back.

A third Wanderers goal was quick to follow, as Scott played in Paul Martin, who finished with a well-placed shot into the corner of the net.  Minutes later Steve Martin found Paul Martin, and he scored his second with a deflected shot in at the near post.

Phil Soane then had the opportunity to score his first goal.  Good work by Paul Martin, saw a cross pulled back to Soane.  After a composed first touch, he dragged his shot wide of the target with the goal at his mercy.

AFC Nam briefly regained some hope, as they were awarded a very questionable penalty.  Chris Hillsdon was harshly adjudged to have fouled the Nam forward, when it looked like it was he who had been fouled.  After a slight delay, and the repositioning of the ball on the spot, Nick Harding was beaten by a low shot down the middle of the goal.

Wanderers almost conceded a second goal, when a Nam played turned Clint Falcus, but Harding produced a fine save as he dived to his left to parry the shot out for a corner.

The Blues were unfortunate not to regain their four goal advantage heading into the break.  Steve Martin's shot across goal was headed into the corner of the net by Prior, who did not look offside, though the referee disallowed the effort.

Into the second half, and the first ten minutes saw neither team create a meaningful chance.  Nam's long ball style could have caused Wanderers' some problems on a greasy surface, but Hillsdon was alert on several occasions to make well-timed tackles.

On the hour mark Steve Martin was pulled back in the box and the referee awarded Wanderers a penalty.  Prior stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to make the score 5-1.

After chances fell to Phil Soane and Paul Martin, Scott turned provider again to send Tom Soane clear to score a deserved goal.

Wokingham then introduced Matt Cook and Lewis Trusty in place of Phil Soane and Paul Martin.  Cook was able to get in two good challenges in the closing stages, to help keep Nam from the Wanderers' goal.

With ten minutes remaining Wanderers scored their seventh of the match, with the goal of the game.  Richard Scott took a good touch, shaped his body and curled a fine shot into the top corner from 25 yards out.

Wokingham introduced substitute goalkeeper Peter Killingworth to make his debut in the final minutes.  He was to be beaten by the final kick of the game, after his goal-kick found a Nam player, who shot beyond Killingworth's dive.

Despite conceding a second goal, this was a superb performance by Wanderers.  The Blues passed the ball around well and demonstrated a hunger to score goals.
