15th October 2006 - Division 2 - Finchampstead Memorial Ground, Finchampstead

Wanderers suffered a third successive defeat, but were left wondering how they hadn't picked up a point after a spirited fightback away to Finchampstead Athletic Sunday A.

There was little sign of a loss as Wokingham started well.  Phil Soane found Anthony Prior on the left, and he beat three men before crossing for Tom Soane to force the goalkeeper into a save in the first minute.

Wokingham were to come unstuck on defending set pieces.  From a tenth minute corner, the ball slipped from Nick Harding's hands, and was eventually squeezed into the net beyond Clint Falcus on the line.

Wanderers barely had a chance to recover, as they were 2-0 down within five minutes.  Finchampstead reacted quickest as the ball bobbled around in the box, and Harding was beaten by a high shot into the net from six yards out.

Twenty five minutes into the match, and the deficit was increased.  From a ball in from the left, the ball slipped from Harding's grasp, and struck Steve Martin to roll into the net.

Despite finding themselves three goals down, Wanderers were aware that a single goal could help turn the match around.  For their three goals, Finchampstead owed their lead to defensive lapses rather than domination.

In midfield, Steve Martin and Jamie Ryall seemed to grow in confidence, and helped set up a chance for Tom Soane, who shot just over the crossbar.

Ten minutes before the break, and the goal came.  Richard Scott controlled the ball well on the halfway line.  Despite losing a boot, he was able to play a pass to Ryall.  With no option to pass to, and no challenge, Ryall ran towards the edge of the box, and let fly.  The Finchampstead goalkeeper got a hand to the ball, but it flew into the top corner via the post.

The second half saw a more buoyant Wanderers press the Finchampstead goal as they attempted to get back into the game.

On the hour mark Wokingham struck their second.  Prior's corner was cleared back to him, and the second ball was turned across goal well by Chris Hillsdon.  After Scott's shot was saved, Tom Soane turned well to fire a left foot shot into the net.

Wanderers produced several great chances to equalise, and even win the game.

Steve Martin played a fantastic forty yard pass to pick out the run of substitute Darren Wakley.  Wakley's subtle contact with the ball beat the goalkeeper, but his effort bounced away off of the far post.

Wakley then turned provider, as his pass evaded the last Finchampstead defender and sent Prior clear.  Prior's firmly struck shot was well parried by the goalkeeper.

Chris Hillsdon then went on a surging run, cutting into the box from the left.  With Scott available in the middle, Hillsdon opted to shoot, and produced another good save from the 'keeper.

With just five minutes remaining, Wanderers came close again.  Steve Martin's cross from the right was headed towards goal by Prior.  Somehow the Finchampstead 'keeper again saved, stretching to knock the ball behind for a corner.

This was not a terrible performance by Wokingham, but the goals that they conceded were to prove too much to recover from.  There were good individual performances from Jamie Ryall, Steve Martin and Phil Soane.
