22nd January 2006 - Division 2 - Langborough Rec, Wokingham

Wanderers slipped to a third successive defeat to Royal Hunt, in a scrappy match that followed a similar pattern to previous encounters between the two sides.

With Mark Timms absent, the Blues welcomed Adam Clark in for his Wanderers’ debut.  Andy Corless returned in the centre of defence, and Darren Wakley started alongside Dave Griffiths in midfield.

After a competitive saw few chances for either side, it was Hunt who struck first after fifteen minutes.  A cross from the Hunt left floated across the box, and was headed beyond Clark from close range.

The Blues looked to hit back straight away, and minutes later Tom Soane found the net, only to be denied by the inevitable linesman’s flag.

As the first half came to a close, Wanderers looked the most likely to find the net.  First Dave Griffiths headed against the bar from Prior’s free kick.  Then from Prior’s resulting corner, Andy Corless’ header struck the outside of the right post.

In the second half, Wanderers continued to push for an equaliser.  There were few complaints when a second Tom Soane goal was disallowed, but a third Soane effort, which followed a great assist from substitute Clint Falcus, was dubious to say the least.

Wanderers’ spirit drove them on, and with twelve minutes remaining, captain Dave Griffiths drove in a low effort from ten yards to equalise.  The goal followed great persistence from Tom Soane on the Blues’ left.

As the game came to a close, it seemed that Wanderers would be the most likely to snatch victory.  The sucker punch came with just five minutes remaining.  A long ball switched from Hunt’s left to right evaded Phil Soane, and the Hunt forward did well to beat his man and cross, to allow a scrambled winner.

Wanderers’ second half effort deserved a draw, and Hunt’s second late winner at Langborough was even harsher than their County Cup victory. The Blues must now pick themselves up for their remaining eight games.
