16th October 2005 - Berks and Bucks Sunday Cup - Langborough Rec, Wokingham

Wanderers crashed out of the County Cup, with a controversial defeat to Royal Hunt.

As expected, the game was highly competitive, closely fought, and played in a good spirit.  The match also mirrored the last meeting between the two sides, with Royal Hunt enjoying the better of the first half.

Despite their early domination, Wanderers' opponents struggled to get any meaningful shots on target in the opening period.  While at the other end Paul Martin and Tom Soane worked hard to make the most of the limited service that they received.

Wokingham's task could have been made easier after twenty five minutes, as Tom Soane was checked as he ran through on goal.  The referee decided against any action, which frustrated Wanderers' players, and Ian Griffiths shot the resulting free-kick wide of the target.

Minutes later, Wanderers had Mark Timms to thank for keeping them level.  A close range shot seemed destined for the bottom corner, but Timms contorted his body to his left and diverted the ball away from goal.

With ten minutes of the half left, Wokingham were undone from a corner.  The defending Wanderers' players were out-jumped, and Timms' touch on the ball only succeeded in helping the effort evade Chris Orbell on the far post, and end up in the back of the net.

In the second-half, Wokingham showed greater determination to get back into the game.  Dan van der Laan O'Donnell came close to drawing Wanderers level, heading over an Ian Griffiths corner.

Wanderers then had another opportunity, as Tom Soane was sent clear.  However the striker was denied by a good save, as the Royal Hunt 'keeper kept Soane's shot out with his foot.

Wokingham were made to work in defence too, and Timms helped take pressure off of the Wanderers' back four by claiming crosses and through-balls.

Just after the hour mark, Wanderers equalised.  A sliced clearance saw the ball loop over the left side of the Royal Hunt area.  Anthony Prior collected the ball and his angled shot was parried into the path of Martin.  Wokingham's top-scorer made no mistake and fired home his sixth goal in as many games.

Wanderers introduced Clint Falcus and then Phil Soane, as they searched for a winner within the ninety minutes, but as the final whistle approached, it was Royal Hunt who pressed more.

With five minutes remaining, the match was decided in controversial circumstances.  As a ball was played through, one Hunt player was offside although it was his onside team-mate who reached the ball and struck at goal.  The shot was heading wide, but was kept in by the offside player, and fired back into the net.

Wanderers had no time to equalise, despite sending 'keeper Timms forward for a late free-kick.  Wokingham do have the chance for instant revenge, in next week's league meeting.
