21st August 2005 - Friendly - Langborough Rec, Wokingham

Wanderers secured their second pre-season victory with a fine performance against First Division Bracknell Rovers.

Wokingham lined up with Allan Mellor in goal, and Ed Townsend starting at right back, as Chris Hillsdon joined Andy Corless in the centre of defence.  With Ian Griffiths injured, Jamie Ryall started on the right wing.

The Blues began well, and ten minutes in could have gone ahead through Paul Martin.  Dave Griffiths won the ball and passed to Darren Wakley, who fed Martin but Wanderers' forward shot narrowly wide.

Minutes later Martin turned provider for Anthony Prior, who was twice denied by Bracknell Rovers' 'keeper.

At the other end Mellor came out quickly on two occasions to deny Rovers, who had taken to playing high balls over the top of the Wanderers' defence.  Corless and Hillsdon were proving more than a match of for them in the first half hour, before the latter moved back to right-back as Clint Falcus replaced Townsend.

Wanderers were causing Rovers some problems from corners, and twice came close to taking the lead towards the end of the half.  From the left, Prior's corner saw Falcus almost mark his introduction with a goal.  Then from two Ryall corners, Griffiths had a shot blocked before Corless had an effort cleared off the line.

With five minutes of the first half remaining, Wanderers came unstuck as the ball was slipped in between Falcus and Corless, and lifted over the on-rushing Mellor and into the net.  The goal was very much against the run of play, and harsh on the Blues.

At half-time Mark Timms was introduced in place of Mellor, and Townsend replaced Chris Hillsdon.  Tom Mansfield also came on, in place of Wakley.

Wanderers were back on level terms within two minutes of the second half.  Chris Orbell fed Prior on the left who won a corner, which he then delivered for Corless to head home.

The Blues kept applying the pressure, and the Bracknell defence struggled to deal with the hard-working Martin and Soane.  A second Wanderers' goal was not long in coming, again from a corner.  Jamie Ryall's cross was not dealt with, and Martin volleyed home from twelve yards out.

Bracknell tried desperately to get back into the game, but were denied twice by the woodwork, and also some smart goalkeeping from Timms.

Clint Falcus suffered an injury with twenty minutes remaining, and Wakley was re-introduced as Griffiths covered at centre-back.

The victory was secured by a third Wanderers' goal after Ryall was brought down just inside the box.  After much persuasion for him to take the kick, Ryall stepped up to fire into the bottom right hand corner of the net.

Wanderers' excellent second half performance was capped by Martin's second of the game.  Prior evaded two challenges on the left, before passing to Soane.  He fed Martin, who rounded the goalkeeper and slotted home.

Phil Soane came on for the last five minutes, as he continued his comeback.  It looked like Soane might do the unthinkable and score, but he was twice denied by an enthusiastic linesman.

A great workout for Wanderers, which will serve to build confidence ahead of the start of the league season.  Particular plus points were Chris Hillsdon's performance in the centre of defence, and Jamie Ryall's committed display.
