13th March 2005 - Division 3 - Victory Field, South Ascot

Wanderers were made to work hard for the points for the second successive week, as they travelled to Ascot to face Sunninghill Jaguars.

The Blues struggled to make an impact in the early stages, and offered little in the way of service to hardworking forwards Tom Soane and Paul Martin.

After twenty minutes, Wanderers nearly made the breakthrough.  Anthony Prior's corner was headed against the crossbar from Dan van der Laan O'Donnell, and the Blues' defender could only head the rebound over.

Ten minutes later and Wanderers did find the net.  After another Prior corner, Tom Mansfield's shot was cleared to Ian Griffiths, who smashed the ball against the crossbar.  The ball then fell to Scott Ford, who placed a low shot into the net from twelve yards out.

Sunninghill did offer some threat, particularly down their left wing where Chris Hillsdon had to put in some important challenges.  Mark Timms showed good handling as Sunninghill got in a couple of crosses towards the end of the half.

Minutes before the interval, Wanderers produced a good passing move that almost created the second goal.  Mansfield and Martin linked up with Griffiths, who crossed for Soane to volley powerfully towards goal.  To Wanderers' dismay, the Sunninghill keeper dived to his right to tip the ball around the post.

On the stroke of half time, captain Chris Orbell got forward and hit a long-range shot which the goalkeeper again saved.

In the second half Wanderers showed some improvement, but were still struggling to pass the ball accurately.

Ian Griffiths hit a dipping shot from thirty yards that flew just over the Sunninghill crossbar.

At the other end, Matthew Elliott and van der Laan O'Donnell were solid as they faced direct balls up-field from Sunninghill, who were playing with one forward.

With twenty minutes to go, Wanderers introduced Lewis Trusty and Clint Falcus to replace Ford and Mansfield.  Trusty was to have an immediate impact, playing a ball out to the left wing for Prior.  Prior ran towards the by-line, before pulling the ball back for Soane, who let the ball run for Paul Martin to smash home from the edge of the box.

The game was finally killed off ten minutes later, as Martin scrambled past the Sunninghill defence, rounded the goalkeeper and finished from an acute angle.

Wanderers have two games left now and know that four points will secure the title.
