6th March 2005 - Division 3 - Langborough Rec, Wokingham

Wanderers had to battle for the points against a determined Syngenta side, but the Blues managed to move another step closer to the Division Three title.

With Allan Mellor sidelined with a leg injury, Mark Timms took over in goal.  Timms showed great handling in the first half, as Syngenta often by-passed their midfield with high balls into the Wanderers' box.

The Blues also welcomed back Ian Griffiths, who had missed the victory against Ashridge Park.

At the other end, Wanderers were denied on several occasions by the Syngenta goalkeeper.  He produced three fine saves to deny Anthony Prior in the first forty five minutes, and also did well to keep both Tom Soane and Paul Martin at bay.

As the half drew to a close, Wanderers twice came close to breaking the deadlock.  First, Prior's corner curled onto the crossbar and bounced to safety.  Then, Tom Mansfield, Prior and Martin linked up well to create an opening for Ian Griffiths, but he blasted over from the edge of the area.

In the second half Syngenta continued to frustrate the Blues, as they sought to hold out for a point.  They even came close to taking a surprise lead.  A dipping volley from thirty yards was heading for the top corner, but Timms was alert enough to tip the ball over.

On a cold morning, Chris Orbell twice delighted the home fans with jinking runs down the left wing.  The Blues' defence was standing firm, with Elliott and van der Laan O'Donnell magnificent in the air.

Just after the hour mark, the breakthrough finally came for Wanderers.  Matthew Elliott dribbled the ball towards the halfway line, and found Martin, who showed great close control before passing to Tom Soane.  Soane's shot was too powerful for the goalkeeper, who got a hand to the effort but could not keep it out.

The goal did not kill off Syngenta, who continued to defend in numbers.  Soane nearly scored his second goal as Prior squared the ball to him, but with the ball slightly behind him, his shot drifted wide of the goal.

With ten minutes remaining, Paul Martin wrapped the points up.  Soane ran down the right wing and crossed for Martin to finish from close range.

In the closing minutes, Griffiths saw an excellent free-kick tipped onto the crossbar, but the score remained 2-0.

Another victory for Wanderers then, but one that they had to work hard for.  In a good team performance, Chris Orbell and Mark Timms were the Blues' best players, as Wanderers kept only their second clean sheet of the season.
