17th October 2004 - Junior Cup - Langborough Rec, Wokingham

Wanderers continued their impressive early season form with a 4-1 victory over Wokingham Cricket Club.

With Andy Corless away, Tom Mansfield returned to the starting line-up as Matthew Elliott dropped into central defence.

In a promising opening spell, Tom Soane twice went close to giving Wanderers the lead but first shot narrowly wide and then was denied by a superb save after he had headed Anthony Prior's cross goal wards.

The breakthrough arrived after 15 minutes after Wanderers were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box following a foul on  Prior.  Ian Griffiths stepped up to curl the ball around the wall and into the corner of the net.

Ten minutes later, and Wanderers' chances of victory were further improved following the controversial dismissal of the Cricket Club right back.

Despite this set-back, Cricket Club were able to threaten the Blues, hitting some difficult crosses into the box but fortunately the Wanderers' defence held firm.

At half-time Wanderers introduced all three substitutes - Lewis Trusty, Scott Ford and debutant Paul Martin.  Martin was able to make an almost immediate impact, firing in the Blues' second goal following a Griffiths' corner.

The goal did not finish Cricket Club and they continued to cause the Blues' problems, particularly with aerial balls.  Allan Mellor made some good saves when called upon, although the entire Wanderers' back line provided effective protection.

Wanderers were able to score a fine breakaway goal to go 3-0 up.  Dan van der Laan O'Donnell cleared upfield and Soane fed Martin to coolly finish for his second.

Still Cricket Club didn't lie down, and were awarded a debatable penalty as van der Laan O'Donnell was deemed to have handled the ball in the box.  Mellor was beaten low to his right.

With ten minutes remaining the hardworking Tom Soane was rewarded with a goal as he reached the ball before the 'keeper after a long ball over the Cricket Club back line.

A fifth goal almost followed with minutes remaining as Prior's left-footed freekick was tipped around the post, but the Blues can be pleased with the win and progression to the next round of the cup.
