15th August 2004 - Friendly Match - Langborough Rec, Wokingham

Wanderers eased into their pre-season with a comfortable victory against the Duke's Head.

With Ian Murray, Mark Timms, Matthew Elliott and Tom Mansfield amongst those missing, it was a depleted twelve man squad that took on their third division rivals.

Following a quiet first fifteen minutes, Wanderers came close to scoring twice in the space of sixty seconds.  First the Duke's Head's 'keeper needed two attempts to keep out Anthony Prior's header from Ian Griffith's corner, as Dan van der Laan O'Donnell charged in.  Then Tom Soane had a shot well saved after being put through by Prior.

The opening goal came five minutes later, with a well-worked corner which had been planned by Trusty prior to kick-off.  Andy Corless' late charge to the far post wasn't picked up and he met Griffiths' cross with a powerful header into the top corner.

Wanderers didn't have to wait long for their next goal as it came just 30 seconds later.  From the restart Tom Soane won possession and exchanged passes with Prior, before guiding a shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

As the half drew to a close the Blues found themselves being drawn into a long-ball game and this restricted their opportunity to create chances.  The Duke's Head pulled one back with the last kick of the half, as a shot from twenty yards drifted over Allan Mellor and into the net.

Five minutes into the second-half Wanderers regained their two-goal cushion.  A through ball to Soane was blocked and spotting the 'keeper off of his line, Prior lobbed the ball over him and into the net from forty yards out.

Wanderers then sensed that they could finish their opponents off, and scored a fourth when Soane took advantage of poor goalkeeping following a Scott Ford pass, winning the ball and tapping into the empty net.

Jamie Ryall was introduced for the hardworking Falcus as some Wokingham players struggled for fitness in the closing stages.  The Duke's Head were able to make frequent substitutions and took advantage of slack marking to score a second goal with fifteen minutes remaining.

They were denied a third goal when Allan Mellor reacted well to tip a powerful free-kick onto the crossbar in the closing stages.

Tom Soane had the chance to complete his hat-trick but struck straight at the 'keeper after Prior had squared to him.

However, in the last five minutes Wanderers struck twice to produce a scoreline that just about reflected the balance of play.

Andy Corless grabbed his second with another well-taken header following Prior's corner.  Corless then turned provider in injury time, crossing into the box for Alan Pearce to smash the ball high into the net.

Overall this was a gentle re-introduction to Sunday League football for Wanderers, who should be tested more in their next two friendlies.
