Wanderers
went into their home game against Downshire Arms knowing that a win would send them to the top of the Third Division.
An impressive run of 5 wins from
their first 6 competitive games has seen them rise to second-place in the league, and advance to the second rounds of both
the League cup and County cup.
With Chris Hillsdon absent, Chris
Orbell dropped back to right back, with Owen Holland ahead of him on the right wing. Wanderers also welcomed
Jamie Ryall back to the subs bench following a knee operation.
From the outset the game was a scrappy
and physical affair. Wanderers had a lucky escape in the first minute when Alan Mellor superbly saved a low headed effort.
In the first half Wanderers created
little and Tom Soane found himself the victim of some questionable offside decisions.
Wokingham fell behind twenty minutes
into the game, when an unmarked Downshire player headed in a corner. The lead was nearly extended but Mellor made a
fantastic save from a well-taken free-kick.
Wanderers started the second-half
with a period of sustained pressure. This almost ended in an equaliser as Anthony Prior's free-kick struck the post.
The match then exploded into
life. Firstly a harsh penalty decision went against the Blues, and Downshire went 2-0 up. Wokingham also lost
the services of influential defender Dan van der Laan O'Donnell, who was replaced by Ryall.
From their next attack, Downshire
were reduced to ten men as their defender was shown a second yellow card following a foul on Mellor.
Wokingham continued to battle and
started to threaten, particularly through substitute Kieron Sherwood, on for Owen Holland.
Despite their numerical advantage,
Wanderers conceded a third goal as Downshire won two headers, the second of which was placed past Mellor.
In the closing minutes Tom Soane
had a goal ruled out and a brawl ensued following further indiscipline from Downshire.
Although the final score flattered
Downshire, Wanderers deserved nothing from the game and will hope for a better performance when the two sides meet next.
