Wanderers kicked off the season with a home match
against Wokingham Cricket Club, who could only field ten players.
This made for a scrappy game and the Blues struggled
to find a breakthrough in the first half. Scott Ford captained the side and he,
along with fellow defenders Chirs Hillsdon, Dan van der Laan O'Donnell and Mark Devenny, dealt comfortably with the occasional
threat offered by Cricket Club.
Midway through the first half, Anthony
Prior's header from a Scott Ford free-kick was disallowed for offside.
Wanderers dominated without really troubling the
Cricket Club defence until Devenny found Alan Pearce with a fine ball and he forced a corner.
Jamie Ryall floated the ball into the box and the keeper could only punch as far as Ford who took the ball past a defender
and drilled a left-foot shot low into the net.
Into the second half and Andy Kinch made way for
Clint Falcus, enabling Ford to move into the middle of midfield alongside Lewis Trusty.
Within ten minutes of the restart Wanderers grabbed
a vital second goal. The hardworking Tom Soane chased down a week clearance and
pulled the ball back to Anthony Prior on the edge of the area. Prior side-footed
the ball first time into the top corner and the ball flew in off the post.
Minutes later two became three. Lewis Trusty held off two challenges before playing the ball to Prior, who took a touch before dispatching
the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
With twenty five minutes remaining, Owen Holland
and Oliver Bambrough were introduced in place of Devenny and Pearce.
The balance of play turned for the next ten minutes
as Cricket Club rallied. A fine Alan Mellor saved denied one chance and further
resolute defending ensured no goals were conceded.
Wanderers hit a fourth with the goal of the game. Chris Hillsdon and Lewis Trusty combined to released Prior on the left, and he played
a first time left-footed cross to Tom Soane. Soane controlled the ball instantly
before firing a superb 15 yard shot into the bottom corner of the net.
The Blues deserved the points thanks to a committed
second-half display. They will hope that the momentum continues when they face
Binfield Social Club next week.
